This is wonderful, Elisabeth. I shall listen to the full episode. Uist boasts the most delicious Michaelmas Struan and harvesting (wild?) carrots is woven in the folklore too. Gaelic is definitely making a come back with younger Gaels. I, as a non Gaelic speaker, supporting a GP providing a lifeline service to an Island, am ambivalent... Gaelic can at times be exclusive. Love your substacks. Go, Elisabeth, go.

p.s. do hope you post Uist Michaelmas Struan...never heard of it on Mull. But Inner Hebrides is very different from the Outer Isles.

Thanks, Fiona! So glad to be able to share Chrissie's recipe - and happy to hear the Gaelic is coming back on Uist. Also true in Wales, though it's not, as you know, identical - also, words change from valley to valley, particularly food-related words - planc, as in griddle, wasn't recognised by my neighbours in the Teifi valley (mid-Wales), though it's the one used in Theodora Fitzgibben et al. I think food-writers have a lot to answer for - as when Chrissie checks Marian McNeill - and individual family recipes are altered to suit the written word.
