Wonderful as always! Thank you Elisabeth!

I recently saw a replica of one of the ships and could not believe how small it was, in fact did not believe it could have been an exact copy! But after looking it up I saw it was pretty accurate!

So apart from the crew they also carried all that food, how amazing that 3 little ships like that went all that way, and back!

Extraordinarily brave - the bill of lading doesn't mention water. Wonder how it was gathered - rainwater?

I am from the Philippines where Magellan was killed a few days after they landed in March 1521. Our history books paint him as a villain but I am so grateful for him and the Catholic priests, mostly Dominicans who brought the Catholic faith to the islands. And yes, the Philippines just marked the 500th year of Catholicity in 2021.

Thanks for very interesting comment, Gia - I've only known about him from the hispanic side. As you say, Magellan never made it home but La Victoria did. I've been told (on reasonably good authority) that the lemon-grass that grows up and down riverbanks in the Alentejo and is used as a digestive tea was introduced into Portugal as a result of the voyage. Apparently Henry the Navigator suffered from indigestion, and it worked.

How awesome. Thank you for this. Lemongrass is now ubiquitous, not only in cooking and tea but also as a scent in shampoos, soaps and candles.

This was such a great read! When I lived in Barcelona, my favorite pizza was topped with nduja, so seeing you mention its fiery kick took me right back. Those Calabrian chilis really do bring such a bold flavor. 🌶️💕

Leftover potatoes refried with just a sliver of ndjua and a scrap of garlic in olive oil - magic!
